MIAM

Understanding Your MIAM and Why It Matters

A MIAM stands for Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting.  When couples separate, the first step before going to court is often to attend a MIAM.  At Family Mediation Services, we make this process clear and affordable. During this meeting, an accredited mediator explains how mediation works and assesses whether it is suitable for your situation.

Affordable MIAM Fees

We keep the cost of a MIAM affordable and our fees start from only £85. Once you attend, you can then use the government’s voucher scheme, which normally covers the cost of the next two joint mediation sessions. If you qualify for legal aid because you are on a low income all your mediation fees will be covered.  This means that financial barriers should not prevent you from attending your family mediation meeting. Either way, you will still receive a MIAM certificate at the end of the mediation process.

Why Attendance is Compulsory

Court rules make attendance at a MIAM compulsory before applying for most family court orders. The MIAM certificate you receive afterwards lasts for four months. This certificate shows the court you have considered mediation seriously, with the guidance of an accredited mediator at Family Mediation Services.

What Happens at a MIAM?

A MIAM mediation meeting is more than a legal formality. It gives you the opportunity to learn how mediation could benefit you and your family or ex partner. The purpose of a MIAM mediation is to lead to a joint family mediation meeting and, where possible, a written agreement at the end. By starting with a mediation assessment you give yourself the best chance to resolve matters outside of court.

The Role of the Accredited Mediator

Your accredited mediator will carry out a risk assessment at the MIAM meeting. Together, you will decide whether it is best to meet in the same room or in separate rooms or virtually. At Family Mediation Services, we offer remote MIAM mediation if meeting in person is not suitable. This flexible approach makes the mediation assessment practical and accessible for everyone.
